A Beginners Guide to Creating an Online Portfolio

Whether you are an engineer, designer, filmmaker, or journalist, you most likely have many projects under your belt. In addition to listing them on your LinkedIn profile, it may be a good idea to consider launching a separate website listing your accomplishments where recruiters can easily look over your work. Since this may seem like an overwhelming process, here are some tips and tricks to help get you up and running.

  • Choose the work you want to showcase.

Are you a UX/UI designer? Focus on including projects where you developed app interfaces or conducted user interviews. Are you a filmmaker? Focus on finding your highest quality projects that communicate your style and genre of filmmaking. Are you hoping to break into the editorial market? Share pieces that you have written for any clubs or courses you have taken.

  • Choose a hosting platform.

There are numerous all-in-one platforms where you can easily transfer your information and add custom designs. Some examples are:

  1. Adobe Portfolio
  2. Squarespace
  3. Wix
  • Upload your materials.

Once you have decided on a platform, the next step is to transfer your materials. According to Indeed, the essential information to transfer includes: an updated resume, a list of your skills, a bio, proof of any certifications, and work samples. Remember to keep it simple.

“My biggest advice is to define your own personal brand and identity when creating your portfolio. From your iconography to your typography, your website should be a reflection of who you are as an individual on both a personal and professional scale. Be sure to also include comprehensive case studies of your projects and writings about your experiences. This will help to differentiate your content and work among other portfolios and websites!”
