>> Let's say, hypothetically speaking that you only had the duration of an elevator ride to sell yourself to a stranger. Would you fumble your words and make them want to jump off on an earlier floor? Or would you peak their interest with a clear and powerful pitch. [ Music ] >> [Background music] That elevator pitch, which doesn't actually have to take place in an elevator tells people who you are, what you want, and what you bring to the table. Ok, Cassie let's give it a try, go ahead and pitch me. >> Hi, I'm Cassie, I'm a fashion design major with two summer internships under my belt, and I'm currently looking for a full time position in New York City. >> Not bad, Cassie. But here's a tip, challenge yourself when writing by constantly asking, so what? For instance, Hi, I'm Billy, I graduated college with an economics degree, so what, right? >> Yea, that makes sense. >> Here's some more advice for crafting your brief elevator pitch. >> The good thing about writing out your pitch is that it forces you to think about what you really want. How can anyone help you, if you don't know yourself? You want to write your pitch like you speak. That way it will be easier to deliver verbally, after all, if you don't say it with confidence then it really doesn't matter what you say, you're most likely to lose the listener. You want to avoid opening statements, jokes, clichés, or catch phrases, they likely won't go over well. And if you're speaking to a representative from a specific employer, insert something about a problem they might be facing, and how you can make a difference. Ok, with all that in mind, what do you say we give your pitch one more try? >> Hi, I'm Cassie, I majored in fashion design at the University of Southern California, I think that clothing can move people, make them feel special, and I want to be a part of that. I have an idea for a new line of evening wear that I think can be a comfortable and flattering alternative for women, casual, yet elegant. I'm currently looking to work at any retailer on the East coast. >> Great job Cassie, you definitely got my attention, and I can't wait to hear more. >> A good elevator pitch should be well thought out and scripted, and practiced over and over again. You should know your pitch like you know your favorite song. Ready to sing it loud and proud when the opportunity presents itself. Well Cassie, I'm this way, but it's been great talking to you, why don't you follow up on me in a week or so? >> Thanks, Billy. [ Music ]
