Overview:
The D. E. Shaw group seeks motivated, intellectually curious students from all academic disciplines to join us as generalist interns. We match each generalist intern with a group involved in the firm’s strategy and operations: you could spend your summer in the COO Group, Corporate Development, External Communications, Finance and Operations, Human Capital, Internal Communications, Investor Relations, or Legal & Compliance. There are many paths you can take as a generalist intern—each involves collaborating with a diverse set of colleagues across the firm on challenging, high-impact projects designed to help you learn, grow, and gain a deeper understanding of what it’s like to work with us. This role offers the chance to be part of an inclusive and collegial working environment.
What you’ll do day-to-day:
You’ll take on projects that require rigorous analytical thinking and creative problem solving. You might evaluate how to assess different indicators of talent, examine the impact of proposed regulation, investigate how various risk measures behave in a financial crisis, help generate content for an internal and external video campaign, or research interview approaches and design case studies.
Throughout the summer, you’ll work closely with your manager, who will mentor you and support your professional development. You’ll be able to strengthen your skills—and develop new ones—via robust learning opportunities customized for generalist interns. You’ll also have regular opportunities to learn about us and our industry from internal and external experts, get to know employees across the firm, and enjoy events and outings like talks, Broadway musicals, and casual game nights.
Who we’re looking for:
- Most importantly, and in keeping with our firm’s culture, we’re more interested in talent, curiosity, and drive than we are in any particular skill or experience.
- We’re interested in highly analytical, accomplished students. Generalist interns communicate effectively (verbally and in writing), creatively solve problems, and thrive on collaboration. They are usually approaching their final year of full-time study.
- Generalist interns don’t need any previous finance knowledge or experience. We welcome and encourage applications from individuals from all academic disciplines. Some recent generalist interns majored in biomedical engineering, art history, physics, social studies, economics, and statistics/data science.
