There’s no question that 2020 has been a year unlike any other. Transitioning from college to the job market is filled with enough stress, much less adding a pandemic to it all. Despite the disruption, you can still make progress in your career path. Below are some tips adapted from Psychology Today.
- Be kind to yourself. The pandemic has pushed everyone to their limits. Acknowledge how you feel and know that it is ok to stop and breathe.
- Take advantage of our services to learn about which employers are hiring. Many employers are still recruiting, even if they aren’t physically on campus. Whether it is attending a virtual information session, workshop, or career fair, you have many opportunities to connect with them.
- Work on improving your online presence. Employers are increasingly using sites such as LinkedIn to search for candidates. This makes your online presence more important than ever! Make sure that your LinkedIn profile is updated with your most current information. Review the job descriptions of positions in which you are interested and ensure that the skills and knowledge highlighted on your LinkedIn profile align with them.
- Network and conduct informational interviews with professionals (including alumni) who can help you learn more about your field of interest. Make sure that you’re presenting yourself professionally, especially in a virtual setting. Always find a quiet environment to conduct Zoom interviews, dress to impress, and ensure that your lighting is good so that the employer can see you. Remember to also use a neutral background and maintain eye contact with the interviewer by looking directly into your webcam or computer camera whenever possible.
