Thank-You Emails and Why They Matter

An effective thank-you email can help you receive a job offer when all things are equal. Whether you are expressing gratitude for a job or internship interview, an informal coffee chat, or an informational interview, it is always necessary to send a thank-you email or note to those with whom you have met. With that in mind, here are a few tips when drafting your email:

Make it Timely
Your thank-you note should be emailed within 24 hours after your meeting because it can be factored into the hiring decision. A timely thank-you email demonstrates to the employer that you are serious about the role and highly desire an offer.

Make it Personal
Make sure you personalize your thank-you message. Include a relevant highlight or key takeaway from your conversation. If you met with multiple people during your interview, send a personalized email to each interviewer.

Make it Short
Three to five sentences should be enough. You do not need to write an essay recapping your entire meeting, but include enough highlights to remind the employer of your qualifications.

Make it Well-Written
Use spell-check and review your grammar before you hit “send.”  Your thank-you email is your last writing sample and can make a lasting impression on the employer.

Keep these tips in mind whenever you meet with an employer, mentor, or informational interviewer. With enough practice, you will write stellar thank-you emails in no time. With a well-written thank-you note, you will set yourself apart from other candidates.
