The USC Career Center recognizes that technological advancement is impacting the future of the workplace and recruitment for job candidates.
With the advent of AI, we encourage students to explore how to leverage generative tools like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot to support the Career Development process. This page provides some best practices for understanding and using AI.
For additional guidance check out What is Generative AI from USC Libraries, an overview of ChatGPT and Data Controls FAQ from OpenAI, and Precautions for Use of GenAI from the USC Office of the Chief Information Security Officer. USC Information Technology Services also maintains an AI webpage.
We recommend that you approach your use of AI with a critical mindset. While AI has increased the efficiency of how we work, these tools should not serve as a substitute for your own voice and efforts. We strongly advise students to:
Understand the Technology
Take the time to learn how AI tools work and what their limitations are. This knowledge will help you use these tools more effectively and responsibly.
Maintain Authenticity
Use AI to assist and enhance your efforts, but ensure that your personal voice, experiences, and values are reflected in your career materials and interactions.
Evaluate Ethical Implications
Consider the ethical aspects of using AI, such as data privacy, bias, and the potential impact on the job market. Make informed decisions that uphold integrity and fairness.
Seek Professional Guidance
Supplement AI tools with advice from career advisors, mentors, and industry professionals who can provide personalized insights and feedback.
