Employer Guidelines

The USC Career Planning & Placement Center is committed to working in the best interest of USC students. We have established employer guidelines to assist you in making on-campus recruiting a professional, fair and ethical experience. We encourage organizations and their recruiters to help us create an equitable and successful recruiting season by acting in agreement with the following guidelines.

Anti-Discrimination
In accordance with University of Southern California policy, the Career Planning & Placement Center does not discriminate against any person on the basis of race, color, sex, sexual orientation, religion, age, national or ethnic origin, political beliefs, marital status, veteran status, or handicap, in admission to, access to, treatment in, or employment in its programs or activities. Therefore, the Career Planning & Placement Center will make its facilities available only to recruiting organizations whose practices are consistent with this policy.

Alcohol Policy
The use of alcohol at any point in the recruiting process both on and off campus — including tailgating at sports events — is prohibited. Any organization violating this policy will no longer be eligible to participate in career events or programs.

Cancellation Fees
Although there is no charge to organizations for on-campus interviews at the Career Planning & Placement Center, all organizations that cancel within one month of their interview schedule will be assessed a fee of $100.00 per reserved room. Organizations attending the Career Fair must cancel two weeks prior to the date to receive a full refund.

Changes in Interview Schedules
Any changes you wish to make to your schedule should be coordinated through the Career Planning & Placement Center.

Greeters
Some employers ask to bring an additional representative (not acting as recruiters/interviewers) to promote the organization in the student waiting area. This practice is distracting for other students and employers and our no-greeter policy will remain in effect. Employers who bring one or more greeters who are assigned to meet and pre-interview students in the Interview Center lobby will be asked to send those representatives back to their recruiting organization. Therefore, for your planning convenience, it is highly recommended to only bring one recruiter per interview schedule.

Interview Center Hours
The Interview Center at the Career Planning & Placement Center will be open to recruiters at 8AM during the on-campus interview season and will close at 5PM. If your organization needs space at the Center after 5PM, there is a $150 per hour charge and those needs must be scheduled at the time you confirm your reservation.

Making a Job Offer
Organizations are responsible for all representations and offers made to students by their recruiters and interviewers. To avoid any misunderstandings when making an employment offer, it is preferable to notify a student in writing of the major components of the job offer including salary, location, benefits, vacation and starting date.

Recruiters should not pursue students who have already accepted job offers from another organization. This behavior can damage relationships with students, other recruiters and the Career Planning & Placement Center.

Deferred, Rescinded or Withdrawn Offers
Withdrawing job offers, whether verbal or written, violates professional standards and may put students in a difficult professional and financial position. If your organization is considering retracting an offer for whatever reason, please call our office immediately to discuss the situation. Please be aware that deferred, rescinded or withdrawn offers will immediately jeopardize your participation in all programs and events at the Career Planning & Placement Center.

Employer Brochures and Recruiting Materials
The Career Planning & Placement Center requests that due to space constraints and the opportunity to link your web site to your connectSC listing, that you please do not send brochures and materials to the Center. We will not display promotional flyers or posters. We encourage you to provide a link to your web site through our online resources.

Exploding Offers
Because USC students are so competitive in the workforce, some employers often try to use inappropriate recruiting techniques. Employers who put pressure on students to accept offers within a very short time period or attach bonuses that “explode” if the offer is not immediately accepted, contribute to an ineffective and stressful experience for students. This method of making a student a job offer does not benefit either the employer or student.

The Career Planning & Placement Center has a policy that restricts employers from implementing these high-pressure tactics. Students must be given a minimum of three weeks response time from date of written offer to allow students to make an informed decision. Our recommended best practice is to respect the commitment that students have for their academics as well as any other previously scheduled interview and do not attach restrictive timelines to your offer. Employers who insist on using this technique will jeopardize their future recruiting relationship with the Center.

Third Party Recruiters
The On-Campus Interview program, Internship Week and Career Fairs are for direct employers of a recruiting organization. Third-party recruiters hired to staff one or more organizations will not be permitted at on-campus recruiting events.

Compensation
All companies participating in on-campus recruiting events must be offering paid positions within their organization. Positions that are solely based on commission with no base pay will not be included in on-campus recruiting events.

Parking
Employers participating in the On-Campus Interview Program may park on campus for the regular campus parking rates. The Career Planning & Placement Center does not reimburse employers for parking.
